Bandon Golf Club’s Fred Daly Plate team played Lee Valley recently in the 3rd Round of the Fred Daly Plate.

While Bandon were down 3 -2 from the away leg we were hopeful on the return leg that home advantage would give us a chance to overturn the deficit.  The home leg (which was played in Bandon on Saturday the 1st of July) was nip and tuck in the early stages but Ronan Hoey, who was first out gained some momentum in his match, which he built on and put the first point on the board for Bandon.  The second match was more of a nip and tuck affair but Ger Cummins managed to get to two up and maintained this to seventeen.  However his opponent birdied 17 and 18 to halve the match.  In the fourth match Mark Tobin went down early and while he held on, he could not overturn the deficit. When Cillian Power won his match on 16 the score stood at level at 4 1/2 points each.  In the final match Jack O’Donoghue and his opponent Keelan McCarhy(Lee Valley) had a ding dong battle and the golf was of a very high standard.  Those who saw them play the tenth will attest to this as first Keelan hit his approach to 10 feet and the Jack hit it to 3 feet.  Both boys sinking their birdie putts, hole halved!!!  By the time they got to 17 Jack had managed to get a two up lead and finished the match off in style with a birdie on 17.

Credit to both teams for the golf they played and the spirit in which the matches were played.

Bandon will face either Kinsale or Dungarvan in the next round and we will keep you updated

Thanks to the boys involved to date Jack O’Donoghue, Mark Tobin, Cillian Power, Charlie Long, Ger Cummins, Ronan Hoey, Denis McCan and Cathal O’Sullivan
